THE COMPLETE WORKS

de DICKENS, CHARLES

  • Usado
New York and London: Harper & Brothers, [ca, 1902]. 213 x 146 mm. (8 3/8 x 5 3/4"). 20 works in 30 volumes. Publisher's appealing deluxe binding of red half morocco over pink marbled boards, raised bands, spine gilt in three small and one large compartment, the latter containing an elongated Art Nouveau-style rose topiary, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt, other edges rough trimmed. ALL BUT ONE OF THE VOLUMES UNOPENED. Illustrated throughout. Spines slightly affected by light (each spine evenly so, but with differing resultant shades), a little wear to extremities, bottom corner of one leaf torn off with loss of a couple of letters, another leaf with small hole and the same degree of loss, other trivial imperfections, but an excellent set of a readable edition from a major publisher, with sturdy bindings that show almost no wear to the joints and an essentially unread text that obviously shows almost no signs of use. This is a pleasing, unread set of the ever-popular works of Charles John Huffam Dickens (1812-70), a writer whose creations are familiar to millions, either directly or through one of the multitude of movies and television shows based on his fiction. As DNB observes, Dickens had an "extraordinary ability to create, and give unforgettably expressive names to, figures who are highly individualized by their physical appearance, dress, and mannerisms, and who are also powerfully allegorical, being brilliant incarnations of various aspects of perennial human nature." Dickens was admired by his contemporaries as a masterful story teller, and despite the disdain of early 20th century critics, he remains popular today both in academic circles and with the reading public. DNB says that "there can be few other English writers--apart, of course, from Shakespeare--with such widespread influence as Dickens, not only on their successors in the national literature, but also on major foreign writers, and few have been the subject of so many outstanding treatises by foreign critics.

New York: Random House, 1957. FIRST EDITION. No. 438 OF 450 SIGNED COPIES. 205 x 130 mm. (8 x 5 1/8"). 5 p.l., 371 pp. FINE CONTEMPORARY BROWN CRUSHED MOROCCO, raised bands, spine gilt in compartments with filigree cornerpieces, gilt titling, turn-ins with decorative gilt roll, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Petersen A34c. ◆Just a breath of wear to the binding, but a near-mint copy, pristine internally. This is a desirable signed copy of the second volume in Faulkner's "Snopes" trilogy, a work written near the end of his storied career. As ANB observes, "Faulkner drew on the history of his region, its brief rise and its rapid fall; on its rich oral traditions, "the rag-tag and bob-ends of old tales and talkings" (as he called them in 'Absalom, Absalom!') that he had begun gathering from the air in his seemingly misspent boyhood and youth; on its customs, mores, folkways, and dialects; and even on its vegetation, geography, and wildlife. Faulkner's fiction conveys a sense of the past and its force.". Leer más

WITH 11 COLOR LITHOGRAPHS, titled, numbered, and SIGNED BY CHAIM GROSS. Text printed in red and black. ◆In mint condition. In this jubilant exploration of faith and community, prominent Jewish artist and émigré Chaim Gross (1902-91) presents a joyful mix of animated figures, bright colors, and decorative lettering in a series of lithographs illustrating the 10 holiest days of the Jewish calendar. Displaced from his small village in the Carpathian Mountains during the First World War, Gross in 1921 immigrated to America, where he studied at the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design in New York. He specialized in sculpture and printmaking, employing the method of direct carving he helped pioneer and for which he would predominantly be known. Publisher's quarter blue morocco over navy cloth boards, smooth spine with silver lettering. In a blue buckram slipcase. ◆In mint condition. This is the first printing of Joyce's masterpiece actually to be done in Ireland--75 years after its initial publication. Generally recognized as the most important 20th-century novel in English, Joyce's chronicle of Leopold Bloom's odyssey through Dublin excited much controversy upon publication in 1922 and was for years a target of censorship, especially in the U.S. and U.K. The present edition also met with some animosity when it was discovered that the editor, prominent Joyce scholar Danis Rose, used some language… Leer más
