Sobre este artículo

Hutchinson's University Library, 1951-01-01. hardcover. Very Good/Good. 0x0x0. 1966 reprint, Hutchinson and Co. (London), 6 x 9 1/4 inches tall purple cloth hardcover in publisher's unclipped dust jacket, gilt lettering to spine, grey endpapers, index, 334 pp. Very slight rubbing and edgewear to covers, with moderate bumping to both lower tips. Otherwise, a very good to near fine copy - clean, bright and unmarked - in a slightly rubbed and edgeworn dust jacket with sun toning to spine and a couple of small edge tears but which is nicely preserved and displayed in a clear archival Brodart sleeve. ~II~ [2.0P] An important book by British philosopher Gilbert Ryle (1900-1976), first published in 1949, in which the author argues that 'mind' is 'a philosophical illusion hailing chiefly from René Descartes and sustained by logical errors and 'category mistakes' which have become habitual.' The work has been cited as having 'put the final nail in the coffin of Cartesian dualism,' and has been seen as a founding document in the philosophy of mind, which received professional recognition as a distinct and important branch of philosophy only after 1950.

Sinopsis

The Concept of Mind (1949) is a book by the philosopher Gilbert Ryle. In it, he describes what he saw as a "fundamental mistake" made by Descartes' dualism, which underlies much of western philosophy. In the work, Ryle coined the phrase, "the dogma of the ghost in the machine," to refer to Descartes' model. The fundamental error, according to Ryle, is a category mistake made when philosophers talk about mind and matter as if they were, "... terms of the same logical type.
