Twenty-six weekly issues in one volume (January 5 - June 29, 1822). Octavo. [2], 592, IVpp., with an engraved title page plate preceding a letterpress title page. Contemporary ink owner name on front free endpaper. Publisher's advertisements laid down on both pastedowns. Contemporary quarter sheep and marbled paper over boards. Spine is mostly perished, front board detached, engraved title page and letterpress title page are detached, lacking front fly leaf, old dampstain on index pages at the back, internally very good with moderate scattered foxing.

First published anonymously from September to October 1821, in the *London Magazine*, this is the first American appearance printed in 17 installments from January 5, 1822 to May 25, 1822 in *The Saturday Magazine*. The first American edition in book form was published by E. Littell at Philadelphia in 1823. A scarce magazine appearance of De Quincey's groundbreaking and influential autobiography.
