This was Michael Crichton's fifth novel under his own name. He was paid a $1.5 million advance for the novel, screenplay, and directing fee from 20th Century Fox. This caused Crichton a problem, as he had only completed novels before negotiating film adaptation rights, this advance before the novel was even written plunged him into severe writer's block. He used isolation tank therapy to treat this block , and eventually finished the book, which became a best-seller.
