After only six weeks in the army, he found himself with the 2/9th Battalion, on the 'Queen Mary' en route for the Middle East, where he was sent forward to fight in the siege of Tobruk. He describes the siege and also the two campaigns he fought through in New Guinea, which included the battles of Milne Bay and Shaggy Ridge. Second edition stated.
