Alexander Somerville (1811 - 1885) was a Radical Scottish journalist and soldier. Here he tells his own story, including travels in early Canada, life in the British army, the "crime" he committed while a dragoon, and the public sensation caused by his punishment - that of being forced to ride an unruly horse and receiving 100 lashes when he got off and refused to remount. TPL 4017.
