Sobre este artículo

Trenton, New Jersey: John A. Roebling's Sons Company, 1925. Paperback. Very good overall. Fascinating work on wire cable construction of suspension bridges, with a detailed photographic study of 68 plates showing each step of construction of the Bear Mountain Bridge, which spans the Hudson River from Bear Mountain in the west bank to Anthony's Nose on the east, at the entrance to the Hudson Highlands.

The bridge opened to traffic on November 26, 1924, and all the cable wire for the two main cables and the steel wire ropes for the foot bridges and suspenders were made by Roebling's.

The 68 full page photographic plates show pier foundations under construction; excavation for anchorage pits; interior view of rock chamber for anchorage; tower nearing completion; foot bridge ropes ready to be towed across river; partial completion of foot bridges; reels of Roebling bridge wire at the ready; men adjusting the guide wires in order to spin the first set of strands; men spinning four strands; clamping of wires around anchorage shoes; compacting of strands in circular sections; views showing deflection of main cables; anatomy of one of the great supporting cables; rugged road construction cut into the side of "Anthony's Nose"; men in squeezing gangs at work atop the bridge; cables completed, with erection of superstructure under way; suspenders in place; etc. With text pertaining to the Bear Mountain Bridge's construction.

Sml folio, 23pp, charts, 69 b&w plates. Dark green gilt embossed pictorial stiff paper wraps. Some slt toning to right hand edges of stiff paper wraps only, otherwise bright and clean.

Reseñas

El Apr 27 2014, un lector dijo:
I came across a copy of this book while I was working as an Auto-Mechanic (Civil Service Title) for the NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY). Yes, I found it in the trash. It is a remarkable pictorial essay of its time explaining in great detail the specifications of wire rope, and the much of the dated equipment used for testing the same, as well as describing the building of the bridge. Although its technical aspect is interesting and enlightening, what is even more astounding are the photographs of the building of the bridge. The photography is priceless and captures how life was for the early pioneers of bridge construction. The copy I had was soft leather bound with an engraving of a photograph of the bridge on the cover. I wish I had this book today. Unfortunately, although some of those in authority have passed examinations indicating a modicum of intelligence, this is not always the case. My copy of this remarkable work was tossed back into the trash by someone of authority with no vision and, obviously, no curiosity. I am still sick over its loss, but I certainly cannot afford the asking price. To add, I would not insult the seller with an offer, as, to a person such as myself, this book is worth every penny. A museum piece. I only wish I could peruse it once more.
