Please See All Photos. ~ Before a lease is mined, we need to know answers to such questions as: o how much oil the deposit contains, o how the various strata of oil-bearing sand lie o how thick and how rich they are o the depth of overburden o the nature and amount of clays and other mineral solids. That is, we need to investigate the geology of the reserve. This is done by drilling the deposit and withdrawing cores. Normally one drills from the surface down to the limestone basement that underlies the deposit. The withdrawn cores are inspected by a geologist and analyzed in the laboratory. The results are used to produce geological maps of the deposit. These maps are then used in mine planning. We also report our results and give samples of core to the Energy Resources Conservation Board (ERCE). This is an agency of the Alberta Government, responsible for the orderly economic exploitation of the Alberta oil sands. The procedures reported in this annual have the approval of the EXCB. Cores are drilled in a pattern. The spacing between the holes is so chosen that the Information obtained from the cores gives a thorough view of the entire deposit.
