After studying law at the University of Caen, Henri Richer was received as a lawyer at the Parliament of Rouen. But, primarily interested in literature, he soon quit the bar and came to Paris to try and succeed as a poet.
He began with verse translations of Virgil's Eclogues and Ovid's first eight Heroes and gave two books of fables, often reissued and which are the best part of his work: the style is simple, sometimes prosaic, but the very mediocre invention and its narration is cold. It was through this that he acquired, and kept, a relative notoriety. Henri Richer is in fact reputed to have written poems in the same style as Jean de la Fontaine1.
He also composed tragedies, the first of which, Sabinus et Éponine (1735), had seven performances at the Comédie-Française and was translated into Dutch and performed successfully in Amsterdam. He is also the author of a Vie de Mécénas, with historical and critical notes (1746).
Gérard Laudin considers that 'Henri Richer is one of the best fabulists of the 18th century'. [wiki, FR]
