Sobre este artículo
[New Jersey], c.1955[?]. [1]p. Broadside. 22 x 17 inches. Illustrated; printed in red and black. Folds; fine.
Goofy and period poster promoting correct posture and good spine health to children in the 1950s issued by the New Jersey Chiropractic Society. This organization appears to have been founded in 1953, after the state of New Jersey allowed chiropractors to apply for licensure.
In its appeal to children, the society used as a mascot of good posture, a friendly rabbit character reminiscent of the popular "Bugs Bunny" cartoon. The rabbit wears a Marine Corps-like drill instructor's uniform, complete with campaign hat or "cover."
The poster was intended as a chart for measuring height and recording growth. Instructions printed thereon say to mount the poster 36 inches off the floor, and to have the children stand against the poster. Their height could then be measured and recorded in the scale along the poster's left margin.
Illustrations show correct and, importantly, incorrect postures for standing, sitting, and lifting objects off the floor. Age, average height, and average weight tables for boys and girls are included: "Children may vary considerably from these standards due principally to the width and depth of the skeletal framework."
The poster was created specifically for "Correct Posture Week May 1-7." This dating, and the society's possible founding in 1953, suggest this poster was printed in 1955.
