This story is based around the ?Court of Miracles? in Paris where beggars populate a square during the day feigning blindness and other disabilities. When night falls however they miraculously recover and live a life of debauchery on the proceeds of their duplicity. The novel is the first of a series of writings about Spanish history from Queen Elizabeth?s era and the parallel is drawn between her court and the ?Court of Miracles?.
