Engraved collection bookplate of 'William Barker,/ Londonderry" and the later signature 'M. A. Robinson/ Londonderry/ may 1898' on front end paper.
The Liverpool-based architect brothers William J. and George Ashdown Audsley first published this book about 1868 in folio (45 x 33 cm.) with 91 plates and republished this extended edition about 1870 in quarto (30.5 x 23.5 cms.) with 150 plates. To some copies at least of the of the latter they added a section at the end (as in this copy) with essays on orders of architecture, linear perspective, practical geometry.
Included here are designs for a wide range of house types and sizes, all showing plans, elevations, details, etc. Smaller houses ('cottages') include those suitable for a bailiffs, double occupancy, gamekeepers, as well as those in gothic, Italianate and semi-detached style. Middle sized houses ('lodges') include those in Elizabethan, gothic, Italianate and Old Scotch styles, and large houses (villas') include examples in the same range of styles. There is a section on ornamental brickwork. The Audsleys, originally from Scotland, practised from about 1860 to 1883, designing many churches and public buildings and were among the best known nineteenth-century British revivalists in decorative design that had been stimulated by the Great Exhibition of 1851. They published a number of books on ornament and architecture.
William Barker (1851-1898) practiced as an architect and engineer in Londonderry. Matthew Alexander Robinson (1872-1929), architect and engineer, set up his practice in Derry in 1898 having previously worked with several leading Belfast architects well known for their gothic style buildings.
