This analytical technique markedly extends the utility of electrochemical detection by offering improvements in sensitivity and selectivity over the amperometric 'thin-layer' type of electrochemical detector (ECD). Furthermore, by using the coulometric electrode array to examine the voltammetric behavior of analytes, a third chromatographic dimension is produced. Now compounds can be identified and qualified by both retention time and characteristic voltammetric redox behavior. The coulometric electrode array, therefore, offers the resolution of the photodiode array with the extreme sensitivity of an ECD.''
