New 110 Page Booklet. Early days in Newton County, IN -- which today encompasses Brook, Goodland, Kentland, Lake Village, Morocco, Mount Ayr, Roselawn, Sumava Resorts and Thayer, and 9 townships: Beaver, Colfax, Grant, Iroquois, Jackson, Jefferson, Lake, Lincoln, and McClellan -- are recalled through a mixture of colorful tales and factual data in this booklet, a reprint of a Newton County history written by J. H. Battle. The 8 1/2 x 11" spiral-bound booklet is printed on 60# paper. The 3-color front cover is protected with a vinyl sheet. The original book, printed in 1883, was called Counties of Warren, Benton, Jasper and Newton, Indiana, Historical and Biographical. Topics covered in the first part of the booklet are: Erection of the county which at one time included Jasper County, Origin of the Name from one of Col. Marion's men, Rivers, Creeks and other Physical Features, Changes between 1833 and 1883, Combating Prairie Fires, Geological Survey, Traces of earliest inhabitants, the Pottawatomies, the Early Settlement with names of early settlers -- Dunn, Elliott, Lacy, Spitler, Lyons, Meekins, Barker, Benjamin, Cuppy, Trout, Meyers, Redding, Kenoyer, Clark, Anderson, White, Haney, Earl, Murphy, Bridgeman, Hunt, Myers, Elijah, Darroch, Kestler, Deardorff, Roadnick, and Johnson, Prairie Banditti-- a desperate gang of counterfeiters and horse thieves once lived in Newton County, the Jasper County Rangers (which served the Newton area as well), Deer and other Game, the Cabin, Illnesses, the Farm, Mills and Markets, Prairie Travel, Primitive Society (pre-1850), Amusements, Political Organization and controversy over location of the County Seat, Public Buildings, County Officials (names), Social Development of the County, Early Roads, Railroads, Newspapers and Politics, Fires, Churches, Schools, and Benevolent Societies. A SEPARATE SECTION ON "NEWTON COUNTY IN THE WAR" refers , of course, to the Civil War. This reviews the sentiments of the county residents, names of many volunteers, and outlines the history of the 51st Infantry, the 99th Infantry, and the 128th Regiment. The last section of the booklet deals with VILLAGE GROWTH OF THE COUNTY. The village of Kentland (formerly Kent) much of which was destroyed by fire in 1870; Goodland, with names of prominent citizens; Morocco, with its banking troubles; and the Railroad Towns of Rose Lawn, Thayer, Julian, and Mt.
