1852. Original Wrappers. near Very Good binding. Octavo. [3]-41, [1 (blank)] pp. Stitched in self wrappers. Toning and early pencil notations to the top of the first leaf, as well as a six-digit number rubber stamped. Despite the pagination beginning on [3], there is no evidence of a missing leaf unless perhaps it a wrapper.
This is Sumner's first major speech as a Senator and one that neither made him friends, nor changed any minds regarding the issue of fugitive slaves. But it solidified his reputation as an outspoken firebrand against slavery. An uncommon edition of a speech reprinted multiple times in the months following. Only 4 institutional holdings of this edition according to OCLC.
