Cradle Songs of Many Nations

This is a beautifully illustrated antique children's music book, "Cradle Songs of Many Nations" by Reinhold L. Herman. 1882 presumed 1st edition; Dodd, Mead & Company; New York. There are wonderful illustrations throughout - most are color chromolithographs with a few black & white drawings by Walter Satterlee. The book itself has stiff (though not "hard") covers and is housed within a flex-cover portfolio-style presentation wrap (with ribbon ties). (The book and the wrap are not bound together, as issued.) There are 31 "cradle songs" in all, representing countries such as America, Norway, China, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Russia, Spain, Japan, Sweden, France, Germany, England, and many more...please see the photos for the complete list. NOTE: this title was also issued in a standard hardcover book format...the edition offered here is not that version.

From the Preface: "The book does not mean to be an exhaustive summary of existing cradle-songs, but gives only a number of such as appeared worthy of the artist's illustration; and picture and music are intended to go hand in hand, in order to convey the richness and similarity of feeling in songs that are at once the most natural outflow of a mother's heart in all nations, and the first musical and rhythmical sounds impressed upon the senses of the infant."

Condition:
THE BOOK: Light smudges to the covers; tight binding with no loose pages; the pages are clean with only initials written in pen at the top of the title page...no other issues found. THE WRAP: Light staining at the bottom edge of the front cover, and at the top half of the back cover; the ribbon tie at the bottom of the back cover has torn - there are approximately 3" left still attached to the wrap, and approximately 3" have torn off (the torn piece is present). Overall in Very Good- condition.
