The story of the Indian wars on the Great plains with the Plains Indians During the Winning of the West as told by a foremost writer on military affairs. The long war between the post Civil War army and the Sioux, Cheyenne, and other Plains Indians is given a thorough analysis of military tacdtics. General Marshall visited the sites of the principal battlefields of the twenty-five year long war and using geography and often-conflicdting battle reports a realistic account of what probably happened. Here are the battle stories of the Nez Perce and Chief Joseph, Custer's last stand, and the the battle of Wounded Knee all from a military point of view. He reminds us that these were military battles indeed and that not all Indians were virtuous and trustworthy and that not all white men were greedy and unscrupulous.
