Translated from the French. 379pp., three folding maps, (one very large map has old repair to fold). This is basically a reprint of the 1797 first edition with a few changes and corrections and of course with added maps. He had planned a five volume set over the next couple of years 1800-1801. Bound in full calf, spine flat and decorated in gilt, joints rubbed and somewhat fragile, closed edge tear to last page. Author's note: "It is scarcely necessary to say, that the high price to which paper has lately risen, and the still greater increase of expence, incurred by the addition of the maps, do not permit the price of this volume to be left the same as that of the first edition". A good copy.

On 29 December 1938, Churchill wrote to his wife regarding his initial draft about this part of his history: "I have just finished writing about Joan of Arc. I think she is the winner in the whole of French history. The leading women of these days were more forceful and remarkable than the men." Profusely illustrated, this slim volume contains 17 illustrations by the distinguished artist Lauren Ford. Though 16 of these illustrations had previously been published as black and white drawings, this is their first appearance in color. The illustration on the dust jacket front cover and frontispiece is original to this edition. This little-known edition is scarce and thus missing from many collections. His only surviving work is the "Excellentium Imperatorum Vitae" (included herein pp. 1-125). This is actually only one volume of Nepos' larger "De Viris Illustribus," originally containing descriptions of foreign and Roman kings, generals, lawyers, orators, poets, historians, and philosophers. Johann Albert Fabricius (1668 - 1736) who was a German classical scholar and bibliographer included this work in his 'BIBLIOTHECAE LATINAE" (1st pub. 1703). The papal address concerns, in part, a pact with Napoleon in which Pope Pius VII agrees not to ask for restitution of the assets of the Catholic Church that had been confiscated by the French. A four volume set early reprint of Sketches of the History of Man, Considerably Enlarged by the Last Additions and Corrections of the Author, in four volumes. Volume 1 -4. Edinburgh: Printed for A. Strahan and T. Cadell, London; and for William Creech, Edinburgh. M,DCC,LXXVII (1788). The author, Henry Home, Lord Kames, was a Scottish judge and writer at the center of the Scottish Enlightenment. This title, along with Historical Law Tracts, laid out his sociological theories, which influenced the study of modern history for two hundred years. Volujme 3 is of interest because of a considerable chapter on the American Indian.Leather bound volumes with gilt decoration on spine and probably had gilt lettering.
