Religious and moral instruction in the form of a story of the trials of a family of orphan children at the hand of various types of proselytizers. The book speaks harshly of American Protestantism. It describes various aspects of American life, such as railroad construction (Brown)". The author resigned his position a rector of the University of St. Mary in Chicago, to become a missionary to the Chippewa Indians and in 1875 to gold miners in Eureka, California.
