In 1939 when Nazi Germany invaded Poland from the west, the Soviet Union also invaded from the east and in the process absorbed the previously independant Baltic republics of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. Kreivenas welcomed the arrival of the Soviets as economic and social saviours but the next few years will see his hopes and dreams turn to doom. .
