Spine tan with black lettering. Slip case light brown with gilt lettering on black spine label. Early Printing, with endpapers imprinted with advertisements, imprint of Bradbury, Agnew on page 150, statement on verso of title page, and advertisements on L4.
Notoriously fragile. Scuffing to boards and along edges. Splitting to spine, with webbing exposed. Tape reinforcement to rear gutter. Front board partially detached, measuring about 4 inches from head of spine. Age-toning to interior pages. Writing on front free endpaper and title page. Shelved in Case 3. Routledge printed nearly 1300 titles in their Railway Library series beginning in 1848. Frequently sold near train stations and other hubs, they were intended for traveling reading, and many did not survive the journeys. Routledge used eye-catching covers to entice travelers, hence the macabre cover. The title story led to national cemetery reform movement. BAL 3340. 1376396. Shelved Dupont Bookstore.
