Garden City: Doubleday, 1941. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. First edition. Introduction by Katherine Anne Porter. A tight and square, near fine copy in a spine-toned, good or better dust jacket with several modest stains on the rear panel. The author's first book, affectionately Inscribed by Welty: "To Willie, friend & Customer with love Eudora. December, 1941." There were no shortages of Willies in Welty's life, including William Faulkner, who wrote to Welty about this time complimenting her on her book; however we think it is most likely inscribed to Welty's lifelong female friend and Jackson, Mississippi neighbor, Willie Spann. Presumably Willie is referred to as a "customer" for buying the book. A sweet inscription in an important title.
Sinopsis
This is the first collection of Welty’s stories, originally published in 1941. It includes such classics as “A Worn Path,” “Petrified Man,” “Why I Live at the P.O.,” and “Death of a Traveling Salesman.” The historic Introduction by Katherine Anne Porter brought Welty to the attention of the american reading public.
