"During this century Latin Scholarship flourished far less vigorously in Africa than in Gaul, where it is well represented by Ausonius and his circle, who had a direct and intimate knowledge of the Latin classics. The life of Ausonius (c. 310-c. 393) extends from near the beginning to near the end of the century; so that in Latin literature the fourth century may be described as the the century of Ausonius." (Sandys. History of Classical Scholarship, Vol. I, p. 221.).
