Sobre este artículo

[1853 DEED LAND GRANT DANBURY NORWALK RAILROAD 1911 fair copy] 1853 LAND GRANT / DEED FOR SALE OF LAND TO THE DANBURY AND NORWALK RAILROAD BY BETSY CANNON (member of family Cannondale, CT, is named after), 21" x 15" 1911 fair copy on large-size heavy period document paper with horizontal adhesive strip indicating where two pieces of paThinper were attached to lengthen the fair copy so the "crowded" original (see note below) could be better comprehended, 21" high x 15" across, two horizontal and two vertical folds as folded, reproduced signatures at bottom Betsy Cannon, Charles Cannon, Harvey Smith, and "Recorded by Sherman P. Fitch", printed text with blank sections filled in by hand with details of the land and its borders, noting in one part that the railroad is purchasing the land for the "construction and maintenance of a Railroad, and the transportation of passengers and property by locomotive or other engine, propelled by steam or otherwise", and at the end that the railroad will build a fence along part of the property purchased, with a note by Mrs. H. A. Chichester dated Oct. 11th, 1911, Wilton, Conn., acknowledging that she has copied the deed for Mr. S. J. Miller (see Notes below) making a couple of minor modifications because the original "was very much crowded on the record", 7-3/4" x 5", two vertical folds and crumpled in part from being placed into the deed as folded; NOTES: DANBURY AND NORWALK RAILROAD, an independent American railroad that operated between the cities of Danbury and Norwalk, Connecticut, from 1852 until its absorption by the Housatonic Railroad in 1886…The right of way established by the D&N continues in operation and is now the DanburyBranch of the New Haven Line of the Metro North Railroad…Construction of the railroad was done by subcontractors. In Wilton, for instance, local entrepreneur Charles Cannon became a subcontractor. From March to December 1851 he employed between 51 and 86 Irishmen each month in constructing roadbeds and laying tracks. (wikipedia); Charles Cannon and Betsy Cannon were members of one of the earliest families of the area of Wilton, CT, which became known as Cannondale… "The Cannon family became prominent in the area, in part because of the Cannon Store, which started operating in the 1790s. In March 1852, the Danbury and Norwalk Railroad opened a station in the neighborhood, near where the tracks crossed Cannon Road, and named it Cannon Station. Soon after, Charles Cannon began a campaign to get a post office in the neighborhood, and on April 29, 1870 it became a reality in a store east of the railroad tracks (very probably in a building which also functioned as a general store and the train station). At this time, the neighborhood became known as Cannon Station…In 1915, Samuel Miller (S. J. Miller) who was instrumental in the final name change, acquired a cannon which had been used in the Civil War battle of Galveston. It was placed at the intersection of Danbury and Cannon roads.(wikipedia) ///// CONDITION: well-preserved, all print and handwritten text legible except for parts of a few words effaced by a dark age-spot around a fold in the lower part of the deed.
