London: A. Zwemmer, 1937. Hardcover. Orig. full vellum, spine lettered in gilt. Near fine. 212 pages. 20 x 13 1/2 cm. Fifty-two woodcuts and four illustrated initial letters printed in bistre. THE ARTIST AND THE BOOK (174) notes, "Small in scale, it is perhaps the most harmonious of Maillol's illustrated books." Text is Thornley's translation of 1657, revised and augmented. Phillipe Gonin of Paris printed this work on handmade paper on a hand-press for Zwemmer. Limited edition, copy 142 of 250 signed in pencil by Maillol on the last leaf.
