Matthew Alexander Henson (1866-1955) gained Arctic experience on a merchant ship before he met Peary in 1887 and agreed to be his valet over the next 22 years. Henson also became a valued member of Peary's explorations in Greenland and on the several attempts to reach the North Pole. In 1909, after returning from reaching the North Pole, Henson accompanied Peary on his lecture tours. After Peary's book, The North Pole, was published in 1910, Henson published Negro Explorer at the North Pole in 1912. Henson lived in obscurity and unrecognized for his Arctic exploration contributions and achievements. over the years, he did receive acknowledgment and presented with awards and membership in the Explorers Club and Chicago Geographic Society and commendations by the U. S Government. This book is a biography of Matthew Henson.
