(Edinburgh and London: William Blackwood, 1935). Crown 8vo; original red cloth with gilt lettering to spine; no dustwrapper; pp. xii + 85 + (ii). Spine sunned and a little mottled; corners a bit bumped; slightest rippling to cloth of upper cover's bottom edge; earlier owner's name signed on front free endpaper; trace of fishmothing to endpapers; moderate foxing throughout. Good. 'Though he disclaimed that his "Dark Folk" poems (1935) were "translations or imitations of native verse", Slater managed to capture something of the feel and idiom of traditional Xhosa song, as in the lovely "Lament for a Dead Cow" ... and also to convey a sense of a vanishing rural culture, once again in terms of the imagery and conceptual world of the Xhosa, as in "Milking Kraal" ...
