Tissue guarded frontis portrait in Vol I of Stanley. 165 woodcuts and maps, including 3 fold-out maps. Fold out coloured map to Vol I has 4cm tear to centre fold adjacent to spine, otherwise in bright condition. Vol II has a large fold out newspaper obituary mounted to flyleaf, from The Standard, of Wednesday, May 11, 1904, the day after Stanley's death, with some closed tears. Rear gutter cracking. Vol IV has fold out map to rear, intact. VI contains the other fold out map, attached to rear, with tears and a chip, approx a square inch or so, missing from map. Also has a cutting from The Daily Telegraph mounted to flyleaf, dated Aug 9, 1913, with reminscences of Stanley. Wear to cover edges, spines darkened, spine ends worn, rubbed, with small nicks. Slight lean to a few copies. Scattered light foxing, a few gutters cracked. Overall, somewhat worn, but bindings remain firm, internally clean and unmarked.
