The book caused an outcry among some Afrikaners who were aggrieved at what they considered ridicule with malignant intent. Goldblatt's concern, however, was an exploration of the relationship between individual South Africans and the society they live in. This new issue offers an additional twenty images from the '60s that were not included in the original book, different cropping to many of the photos, as well as Goldblatt's notes on how the books came into being.
