David St. John. A cyphering book (1818) kept by Revolutionary War soldier and veteran, David St. John (08/15/1762 - 06/06/1840) for calculating the differences between sterling money and the current lawful monies in circulation in the various states of America. A manuscript book of 125 pages, ink on paper. Signed on page 1 and elsewhere in the book, "David St. John[']s, his Book." Pages 1 – 29 are paginated by the author, pages 30 – 122 are not. Pages 123 – 125 are blank, but on the verso of page 125 there is an inverse notation in St. John's hand, which is dated 1818. Pages measure 32.5 cm x 20 cm. Stitched into a heavier paper wrapper with lap-edges, now worn with a horizontal tear on the back cover but still holding. Both covers were used as blotters. There is a patterned acid paper burn on pages 118-123, not affecting strength of the laid paper or its readability.

A manuscript text book for mathematics, starting with the four basic arithmetic functions: addition (simple and compound), multiplication and division) . The first cases illustrate subtraction, multiplication and division of "Federal Money."

Compound addition begins with "Sterling Money": "the money of account in great britain [sic] this has hitherto been the currency of the united states [sic] yet the value had depreciated in some states more [than] others although it was nominally the same throughout the pound is the money unit or integer." Application of compound addition to troy weight, avoirdupois and apothecaries weights follow. Cloth, dry, liquid (pints, quarts, gallons, hogsheads, pipes and tons) follow, as does long measure (barley corns, inches, feet, yards, rods, furlongs, miles and degrees). Land or square measure, solid or cubic measure and time are also included. Compound subtraction follows the same pattern and order, starting with "sterling money."

The most important record of reducing the currencies of the various states is in the "Cases" or rules to be followed which illustrate how a banker or businessman from a neighboring state calculated an equivalent currency value in the early decades of the American Republic. For example, Mr. St. John writes on page [57]: "To reduce new york [sic] and north [sic] Carolina currency to new england [sic] and virginia [sic] currency Rule Subtract a fourth." Many examples are given to "Fellowship" (Shares), Rule of Three, Rule of Three Inverse, Tare and Trett, Interest, Discount, Equation of Pay, Barter, Loss & Gain, Double Rule of Three, Alligation Medial, Promissory Notes and Tables of Even Parts.

David St. John enlisted on March 1, 1779 as a Private in Captain Jebez Gregory's Connecticut State Troops or Coast Guard and served in active service 1779 - 1781 under Col. John Mead and Col. Stephen St John and "was in the battle when Fairfield and Norwalk was burnt." St. John was also engaged in guarding the seacoast at Norwalk. See: Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty Land Warrant Application File W. 25,104, for David St John, Connecticut.

Clavijero's History of Baja California, which was first published in Italian, then in English, then a Madrid edition and then the Mexican edition. [Handbook of Middle American Indians, Volume 13, page 293] First Mexican edition. Clavijero, a Mexican native, was exiled with the other Jesuits in the 1760s, and lived in Italy thereafter. His history of Mexico is considered one of the best of the early histories of the subject. His history of Baja California is the first such, and contains passages relating to the foundation of the mission at San Francisco, as well as material on Kino and Salvatierra. Translated from the Italian manuscripts by Nicoles Garcia de San Vincente. The Palou volume is essential reading for the early history of Northern California. This is the second edition of the Vida of Serra. First published 1787. Francisco Palou (1723-1789) was a Franciscan missionary, administrator, and historian… Leer más

Descripción:
THOMPSON, Ruth Plumly. Typed manuscript with handwritten corrections and changes for an unpublished book titled Wooden Animals I Have Known. 40 letter-sized (8½" x 11") sheets. Loose sheets of typescript loosely laid in to a construction paper folder with a pictorial label affixed to the front. Some hand-written corrections and changes in pencil. Wear, chipping and a few small, closed tears around edges of covers, hole evident where sheets had previously been held down by a fastener, else a clean manuscript.
A manuscript for an unpublished book of poems by Oz author Ruth Plumly Thompson, probably submitted to Volland for publication, but ultimately not produced. The title sheet appears to be a carbon, while all the other sheets appear to be the original typescripts. A series of charming poems about various toy wooden animals that the author has encountered over the course of her life, with delightful anecdotes and even a few poems about wooden objects that aren't animals, like "An Old Broomstick."… Leer más

Small Octavo. Latin manuscript is written in poetic style by C.P.F. Kurrer who was a distinguished member of the famed Latin Society of Jena. 89p. OCLC notes that a 16-page edition was published in Tubingen by Fues in 1786. This much larger version of several thousand lines is entirely handwritten in Latin poetic style. As William Clark as noted in his Charismata and the Origin of Research Universities, p. 158ff., "The Latin Society of Jena (founded 1733) ..required members to submit written dissertations exhibiting eloquence and erudition." This was, of course, in contrast to the universities which like their English counterparts were still under the domain of the Aristotelian dominance through the Middle Ages and into the Early Modern period. These highly literate societies which existed outside the university system of rote memory became (as Clark noted) the predecessor of the modern university system with seminars and original research. The Societas Latina Jenensis according to the Scholarly… Leer más

1854 HUGE MAP Colton's Western Tourist Emigrant's Guide Americana California

J.H. Colton founded an American mapmaking company in the early 1830s which became an international leader in the map publishing industry until 1890. Colton created railroad maps, immigrant guides, elaborate atlases, and more all printed using engraved steel plates, which produced higher quality prints than maps made with less costly wax engravings, which were often separately hand water colored. and were recognized for their decorative borders.
J.H. Colton's 'Western Tourist and Emigrant's Guide'is an important 19th-century geographical book with an enormous folding map of the American 'west' including Ohio, Missouri, Indiana and Wisconsin. According to Howes, this work includes descriptions and material on California, Oregon, and Texas, with overland routes and westward expansion.

1874 1ed Confederate General Joseph E Johnston Civil War Narrative CSA Military
Joseph E. Johnston was a 19th-century American Army officer who served as a Confederate States Army general, even though he trained at West Point. However, his military acumen was wrecked and constantly criticized by Confederate President Jefferson Davis – with whom Johnston was very displeased. Following his service time as a military officer, Johnston wrote and published his own memoirs – memoirs which were mostly attacks on President Davis and other officers, as well as defending his own actions and decisions during the Civil War.

'In Tall Cotton' says of this work:
"A vigorous defense of his own actions and necessarily, therefore, a hard-hitting attack on others, particularly on President Davis against whom he records his objections to excess."

According to Nevins, this work is
"one of the earliest Confederate reminiscences; strongly partisan, anti-Davis, and defensive in tone."

1875. An album dated 1875 featuring the work of the "Beehive Club", with over 150 uniform postcard sized watercolour and pen works, gathered into themes. The output of a very talented, most likely youthful, or at the very least gleefully amateur, Victorian sketching club, possibly executed via correspondence, each member being given a brief to work with, and the results being carefully added to the album. The artworks are arranged around a regularly changing theme, often literary, such asworks centered on Longfellow's "Evangeline", or Defoe's "Robinson Crusoe", and sometimes the themed suites are broader and open to interpretation, as in the collection merely entitled "Winter", or the section titled "Ruins." Most of the offerings are titled and captioned in red ink, in one hand, presumably that of "M.B.O." who seems to have had the duty of being club archivist, carefully initialling each work according to artist ("E.D.", "M.P.K.", "F.M.B." etc.), recording the theme or subject in an elaborate gothic… Leer más
