Library bookplates, rubber stamp and blind-stamps. Provenance: Label on rear endpaper "Presented by Miss M. E. Joachim - October 1939". Mary Eleanor Joachim (1874-1957) was a bookbinder who trained with Sangorski and Sutcliffe in London. The Joachim family emigrated to New Zealand in 1876. The binding of this volume is likely to be by Mary Eleanor Joachim, as it is in the style of Sangorski and Sutcliffe bindings. Dunedin bookseller's ticket on front endpaper, "H. H. Driver".; Third edition. xiv, 800, [2 (blank)] pages + colour frontispiece + 2 plates + folding colour map. Numerous in-text illustrations. Rebound in half-green morocco (faded to brown on spine). Page dimensions: 266 x 177mm. Spine with five raised bands and six gilt panels. Gilt title and date "1897" on spine. Gilt double rule to boards. Marbled endpapers. All page edges gilt. .
