Tinkle was Book Critic of the Dallas Monrning News, teacher at SMU and the author of Thirteen Days to Glory, one of the first full Alamo histories and still highly thought of. He was also author of the first full biography of J. Frank Dobie, An American Original. "Over the years Tinkle received many awards and tributes, but surely one of the highlights of his career came on February 27, 1977, for on that day Tinkle was honored by the Friends of the Dallas Public Library at the ranch of philanthropist extraordinaire Margaret McDermott. The proceedings were recorded by Dr. Robert S. Sparkman, Dallas physician and bibliophile, who subsequently edited the speeches and remarks into book form." -Dallas Morning News.
