There are no real people in this novel. However, many of the events and the settings are genuine: Gallup and Dulce, Taos Pueblo, the trading post at Pinon Canyon de Chelly, Shongopovi Village at Second Mesa---all are described as nearly as the author can recall having known them. Also the same may be said of the powwow at Taos Pubelo gym and the 99 Tasapkachinas on the plaza at old Shongopovi. There are few Navajos today who doubt the existence of witches. Accounts of witchery not unlike those in this novel may be found througout the anthropological and ethnological literature dealing with the Navajo.
