That the discovery of the vault decorations of Nero's Domus Aurea was a major catalyst in the development of Renaissance wall and ceiling painting has been a commonplace since the time of Vasari. Yet until the publication of Mme. Dacos's comprehensive volume, anticipted by her articles of the last decade, we had no very precise notion of what was known of the Neronian frescoes or when and how they were influential. Previous attempts to investigate the subject have been archaeological in emphasis' or fragmentary. The Domus Aurea (Latin, "Golden House") was a large landscaped portico villa built by the Emperor Nero in the heart of ancient Rome, after the great fire in 64 AD had cleared away the aristocratic dwellings on the slopes of the Palatine Hill. E-071; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 203 pages .
