Text in Italian and Latin. . us Workers in Naples was founded circa1600 for the service of the poor and the teaching of catechism in rural areas. It risked ext inction during the plague of 1656, during which the congregation worked hard to assist the infected; many caught the disease in tu rn. Although their apostolate was limited to the areas surroundin g Rome and Naples and their numbers limited (the congregation nev er exceeded one hundred members), the Pious Workers had great pre stige in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and their house s (especially St. Nicholas of Charity in Naples) were renowned ce nters of spirituality. We don’t have much information on De Tor res, other than he was an early provost of contemporary renown. Ludovico Sabbatini [1650-1724] was an Italian priest and educato r, who served as provost from 1699 until his death. He was beatif ied by the Catholic Church in 1765.
