The newly independent countries that emerged from colonial rule after World War II were usually established on the the premise that a Western democratic system was going to 'successfully manage human conflict and...would assure the viability of the political system,' as the author says in his introduction. Of course, that hardly ever happened. Here the author looks at how the transition was made in Malaysia and how it those democratic ideals fared in the first two decades after independence. 443 pages with an index.
