The White House had these books rebound in handsome leather and sold them to help pay the debts of the campaign . President Roosevelt SIGNED each copy on the limitation page under a pastel image of the White House . The name of the donor was printed in gold gilt on the front cover . In this case the buyer was John W. Childress , the Director Of Public Works for the District of Columbia Childress was a close associate of Senator Claude Swanson , now a member of Roosevelt's cabinet . In this copy the original , dynamic and colorful stiff wraps were preserved and bound-in .
