Stephen Fletcher, for the Clarendon Press, Oxford: 1715., 1715 pp. (14), 182, (18). The very thin paper used to cancel a4 and b4 has deteriorated - completely on a4. Text in Greek with Latin notes. Three engraved portraits have apparently been removed. ** Extensive manuscript translations into English. 8vo. (in 4). [18 5 x 113 mm.] Contemporary full calf binding. Boards tooled in blind with several frames. Cracked at joints. Early ownerships, including: Jacob Nash, Oxford and E.G. Davis, 1847. Dibdin I:487. Aeschine s (Ca. 390?314 B.C.), Athenian orator and polititian, was a great rival of Demosthenes (384??322 B.C.). He rose from humble circumstances and became powerful in politics because of his oratorical gift s. At first he opposed Philip II of Macedon, then later changed sides, arguing that resistance to Macedonian power was useless. Both he and Demosthenes were members of the embassy to Philip in 348 B.C ., and afterward Demosthenes bitterly and baselessly accused Aeschines of accepting…

Descripción:
[Oxford:] excudebat Johan. Crooke, 1696 [date in Greek]. First edition of the two antagonistic orations of Æschines and Demosthenes as edited, with a Latin translation, by the young Oxford students Peter Foulkes and John Friend, who were both about twenty when this volume was printed. Contemporary calf. Gilt spine with red morocco label. . Octavo. With three engraved portraits, of the two orators and of Cicero, by M. Burg; these are included in the pagination. The Latin translation is printed at the bottom of each page. Joints, corners a bit rubbed, a little light foxing. A very good copy. This was for many years a popular edition; and was reprinted in 1715 if not oftener: but the first is the preferable edition, and is considered very correct. The explanation of the more difficult Greek words at the end, was among the principal causes of its popularity" (Dibdin I, 487).
