For the llustrations, Ashbery chose his friend, the artist and fellow New Yorker, Jane Freilicher. "Persimmon!" There it is: the color of the leather label for the book and box and for the title page and chapter headings. Look for it echoed in Freilicher's three fantastical and beautifully colored woodblock prints that build upon the themes of the story.

Printed on hand-made paper with three color illustrations by Jane Freilicher , executed using multi-color wood blocks by Keiji Shinohara.
