First edition. *Desmond MacCarthy was a leading figure of his time; equally famous as literary and dramatic critic (under the pseudonym Affable hawk) and as social personality: a friend of such diverse figures as Belloc and Beerbohm, Hardy and Henry James, Bertrand Russell and Virginia Woolf. This selection of his writings includes an introduction by his son-in-law, David Cecil.
