The Sturm Cigarette Company (Sturm Zigaretten, Storm Cigarettes or Military Assault Cigarettes) was created by the Nazi Party's Sturmabteilung (SA). The plans originated in 1929 when Arthur Dressler proposed setting up the factory in Dresden, the centre for cigarette production in Germany.. The sale of its cigarettes provided the SA with operating funds. Coercion and violence were used to increase sales. The Nazi Storm troopers were not only encouraged to smoke the Sturm Cigarettes, indeed they were forbidden to smoke other brands.
Known as the Brownshirts, The Sturmabteilung (SA) was the Nazi Party's original paramilitary wing. It played a significant role in Adolf Hitler's rise to power in the 1920s and 1930s. Its primary purposes were providing protection for Nazi rallies and assemblies, social disruption, fighting and intimidation. The SA was replaced by the SS after Hitler withdrew his support of the Sturmabteilung in the Night of the Long Knives in 1934.
