London: Effingham Wilson. Very Good- with No dust jacket as issued. 1851. First Edition. Hardcover. Moderate rubbing to spine and boards. A 12mm split to cloth at head of rear joint, and a 10mm split at tail of rear joint. Front endpaper split at gutter. No signatures or previous owner's markings. A few spots of foxing. Minor stain to upper corner of first few leaves. ; Volume Three only of three volumes. [1-2 (title leaf)] (1)-532 pages. Bound in green cloth boards, without any lettering on spine or boards. Binding is not recent, possibly early 20th century? Page dimensions: 195 x 119mm. Rare. Sotheby's (London) sold a three volume set in original cloth in 2023 for GBP 16,510 (Sale L23402, Lot 193). "The Sultan having put on an European dress, and covered his head with a small fez, or red Greek cap, armed himself with a pair of pocket-pistols and a dirk, and enveloped himself in an ample, olive-coloured cloak: he then took a small riding-whip, and descended into the court below, where the horses were waiting for him." - the opening sentence, Vol. III, Chapter 1. [Reference: Michaelides, Chris (2002) “Greek Printing in England, 1500-1900” - "a series of interconnected episodes used to create a vast fresco of Ottoman society in the first decades of the nineteenth century".] .
