The deluxe copies are bound in quarter red morocco and include a slipcase and a signed proof of the book's frontispiece. Patterned paper-covered boards in red, black, and white, quarter red morocco. With spine label lettered in gilt. Housed in a black cloth slipcase paneled with patterned paper matching the book's covers. . Folio. With 75 wood engravings by Richard Wagener, 15 of which are in color, all printed from the original blocks. Each image is accompanied by a date (from 1983 to 2018), title, and caption. Two of the engravings are fold-out panoramas of Yosemite landscapes. Text printed in black and red using Eric Gill's Joanna typeface on Zerkall paper. Includes a tipped-in frontispiece and an additional proof of the frontispiece, signed and numbered in pencil by Richard Wagener and housed in a large black envelope. A fine copy. A Dialogue with Wood Engraving is a retrospective on the nearly four-decade career of California-based engraver Richard Wagener (b. 1944). The introduction by Wagener, along with his captions and epigrams, narrate and illuminate his work: the epigram that accompanies his piece Migration (2007) reads "I think in wood."

[Pasadena]: Archetype Press, 2013. 2 prints, 22x14cm, each signed by Wagener and dated 12/2/13. Both in fine condition. Accompanied by a letterpress printed card from the Archetype Press. Richard Wagener, master print maker and wood engraver from California, produced a set of 31 images for the 2013 publication, The Sierra Nevada Suite, by the Book Club of California. To celebrate the publication, the Archetype press at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena hosted a talk and printing party with Wagener on December 2nd of 2013. These two prints, made directly from Wagener's blocks and signed, are in a smaller format than the final 4to publication. They are from the same block, with one containing rust-colored lettering. A nice set.

Wood engravings (as opposed to wood carvings) are produced by practicing "the exacting art of hand engraving in endgrain hardwood" (n.b., quote from the Colophon). This book a collection of seventeen stunning wood engravings by various artists, each printed and signed below the plate by the artist. Gale Mueller (who signed the essay page "In the Beginning...") invited the artists "to submit an edition of engravings on the title theme of 'surroundings, ' and the variety of responses shows the versatility of wood engraving as a medium" (ibid).
