Apart from his diary of his travels in the New York state, Washington, Kentucky and Canada Marryat included in the first part separate sections on language usage, credit, penitentiaries, army, the American marine, slavery, religion in America, societies and association, law, lynch law, climate, education. The second part dealt with travelling, emigration and migration, the newspaper press, American writers, the Mississippi and its society, women, public opinion, patriotism, relations with Britain, moral climate (low in part consequential from the lack of an aristocracy), government, Canada, Indians, and the Florida war.
