First U.S. Edition. Hardcover. Boldly signed by Grass on the front flyleaf. Stated first edition, first printing with "BCDE" on copyright page (note: HBJ did not use the "A" from 1973-83; thereafter, they did). Translated from the German by Ralph Manheim. Grass' autobiographical novel about German politics in the 1960's interlaced with memories of treatment of Jews in Danzig during the Hitler era. Grass won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1999. 8vo green cloth. PLEASE NOTE that all our First Editions are also First Printings, unless we specifically note otherwise.
