Paris: De L'Imprimerie Royale, 1790 A good copy of the 1st edition complete, with 11 folding charts and maps and 1 folding plate. Fleurieu had a naval military background and became a leading politician and promoter of South Seas exploration. This copy has a probably contemporary quarter leather binding with marbled boards and marbled page edges and marbled endpapers. The binding has wear but is in good sound condition. There is some damage to the front endpapers in the gutter, and some pencil annotation to the verso of the fep. Contents: title page; directions to binder 1p; Errata 1p; Introduction v-xvi; contents 4pp; folding chart; text pp 1-293; half title - Appendice; text pp 297-309; Fin; 11 further folding maps, charts and plate. Berwick: Printed by and for W Phorson; B. Law and Son, 1793 An extremely scarce 1st edition copy. Classed as 'fair' because it is lacking the frontispiece portrait and has been rebound in a more recent (?1960's) full leather binding. HMS Pandora was sent to recover The Bounty after the famous mutiny. It sailed on 7 November 1790 and picked up 14 of the mutineers before running aground on the Great Barrier Reef. George Hamilton was the ship's surgeon and the only eye-witness to write up an account of the voyage. This copy is in newer full leather with raised bands and faintly tooled title and author to the spine. New page marker. Contents: initial blank; title page; text 161pp; blank; table of latitudes and longitudes pp 163/4; blank. Page edges are untrimmed and the text is in very good clean condition with light toning to paper. Complete 18 volume set, half leather with original boards and modern matching spines. 1824. Overall condition is very good. Recent fine binding using original boards. Old blanks are gone, this has new blanks. Only interior markings are pencilled numbers on back of title page. Some foxing in text, heavier in maps. Many pages uncut. 17 unpaginated maps and one plate of vocabulary. Set is a compilation of journals and texts from every major European voyage of discovery from antiquity to 1800. Kerr is not so much an author as an editor. Wherever possible he reproduced the original texts and journals. He edited them to reduce redundancy but maintain fidelity to the original text. His first volume shows the trouble he went to. He has rendered into English 9th century Icelandic texts then proceeds on to 9th and 10th century Anglo-Saxon texts.
