Serenius was chaplain to the Swedish embassy in London 1725-35, where he tried to strengthen the relations between Sweden and Great Britain. It was during this time that he began work on his dictionary. The preliminary essay, "De veterum Sveo-gothorum cum Anglis usu et commercio dessertatio," by Ericus Benzelius, highlights the parallels between Anglo-Saxon and Swedish, and he acknowledges in his Preface the work of George Hickes, John Hudson, Henry Dodwell, Thomas Smith, and Sir Humfrey Wanley.
