A popular Catholic theologian "confronts the hard questions," including problems within the church. McKenzie was awarded the Thomas More Medal for the most distinguished contribution to Catholic literature in 1969. Typical of McKenzie's outspokenness is this remark aimed at the Chuch's ability to make money off of Jesus: "Jesus Christ is easily the all-time champion moneymaker, with not even a close second worth mentioning" (217). And, in the same essay, "Asking official [church] leadership to face the problem of living off Jesus is, I know, like hiring John Dillinger as security chief at a bank. . . ."
