Edition originale (une réédition paraîtra en 1830) rare de cet ouvrage important pour comprendre le fonctionnement des polices à l'époque, d'autant plus recherché que les sources primaires sur le sujet ont disparu. Il fut un temps attribué à Guyon (Quérard, repris par Tulard), mais il semble que cette attribution soit erronée. Le dos est manquant, mais l'ouvrage reste relié, les plats solidaires et la gouttière bien régulière. L'intérieur est très frais, avec de très rares et très pâles rousseurs..

Alexandrine des Echerolles (La Ferte Hauterive, south of Moulins-Allier) was 13 y.o. when the Revolution forced her father, aunt and brothers to take refuge in Lyon. Her father had been elected colonel of the National Guards at Moulins, but when he was threatened with imprisonment he fled to Lyon then Switzerland, and left his daughter in the care of his sister. The aunt was murdered by the revolutionary court for refusing to reveal where her brother was living, and Alexandrine found herself alone, and relied on family and relations to taker her in.

Le tome 1, qui correspond en réalité au tome 3, porte in-fine la mention "fin du tome premier", et ainsi de suite jusqu'au tome 4 (qui correspond au tome 6), qui porte la mention "fin du quatrième et dernier volume".
