FIRST ENGLISH EDITION 1657, "Traité de la connoissance des animaux" translated by a Person of Quality (Pierre Chanet). Small 8vo, approximately 160 x 100 mm, 6¼ x 3¾ inches, pages: [8], 1-304, bound in full contemporary panelled speckled calf, with head of spine in red with same decoration to match label, gilt lettered label to spine, gilt decoration to spine, marbled endpapers, edges red. Binding slightly rubbed, head of lower hinge repaired with matching gilt decoration, some cracking to head and tail of upper hinge, covers still firmly attached, pale staining in places, tiny rust hole in 1 lower margin, not affecting text, several misnumberings but all catchwords and signatures correct, trimmed at top margin, with some loss to several running titles, not affecting main text, large old ink presentation inscription on front endpaper, large engraved armorial bookplate on blank side of first marbled endpaper (James William Sleigh Godding). Otherwise a very good copy. The book is about animals, whether they have reason, intelligence and are able to comunicate etc,. Octavo, pp xii, 310, illustrated (including two chromolithographs by Keulemans), a rather poor copy, lacking the folding map, an ex-Boots library copy in red library cloth, a bit used and weak internally with cracked hinges (through front and rear hinges tight and strong), some plates a little frayed, a small stamp on the front endpaper and a library label on the rear, the cloth rather worn, marked on the upper cover, the spine torn. A useful working copy. [Andre was an explorer and collector of natural history specimens . He wrote a glossary of common and scientific names of plants and animals and put together a collection of 1800 bird skins which are held at Tring. He was a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and a Fellow of the Zoological Society. He travelled largely in Venezuala and Columbia and introduced the Anthurium plant to Trinidad & Tobago, 1915.]. Signed by Author. First English edition. Cloth. Fair.
